BIBLE STUDY WITH FR. JIM

Each Wednesday at 7:30 in the St. Patricks Room, explore the Gospel of John. Don’t worry if you weren’t able to attend last years class. Bring your Bible and your passion to learn more about the person of Jesus .

TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Focus: God is the Master of the vineyard, from whom all blessings come.

Each of us is called to be a worker in God’s vineyard. If we lose sight of who owns the vineyard, however, we can get into trouble. If we start to think that we are our own lord and master, we may forget that obedience to God—the Master of all—is the only true way to achieve success, which for us, is eternal life.

Today’s first reading tells of God’s generosity toward the Israelites, and how they repeatedly wasted his blessings. In the second reading, Paul gives encouragement to the Philippians to put their trust in Jesus. The Gospel shows that judgment will be severe for those who reject God’s Son and misuse his blessings.

BAPTISMAL PREP CLASS……TODAY

Your baby’s baptism is important to all of us.  Baptism confers God’s life to your child and as such is the greatest gift you can offer your baby.  Before baptism, parents and godparents are asked to attend a baptism preparation class.  Preparation classes will be offered at Noon TODAY. Godparents should be practicing confirmed Catholics above the age of 16.  You may consider making a suggested offering to the Church of $25.00.

A THANK YOU FROM CATHOLIC CHARITIES….

Dear Members of St. Mary’s Parish,

Thank you so very much for your donation to the Catholic Charities Guardian Angel Food Pantry. You did a fantastic job. All the items you collected show your devotion and generosity toward your Christian Faith. This donation came at the perfect time due to the way our economy is at this point. Many clients struggle during this time providing a nutritious meal for their families. As Christians we need to share our bounties and make sure all of God’s children are fed. The parish collected 335 pounds of food for our pantry. Your generosity touched all the staff at Catholic Charities. You will be in our daily prayers as we serve the needy of our community. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

ST. MARY’S BOOKSTORE

Feel free to stop by before or after masses to check out the new titles in the bookstore. There is something there for everyone.

OCTOBER COUNT

During October we will be counting the number of people attending Sunday Masses in our parish. Knowing how many people attend Mass each weekend assists Diocesan pastoral planning and identifies other areas of pastoral work, such as outreach to inactive Catholics. The data also helps track areas of the Diocese where the Catholic population is increasing or decreasing.

JUST FOR LAUGHS

A young boy entered a barber shop, and the barber whispered to his customer, “This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch and I’ll prove it to you.” The barber put a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, then called the boy over and asked, “Which do you want , son?” The boy took the quarters and left. “What did I tell you?” said the barber. “That kid never learns!” Later the customer saw the young boy coming out of an ice cream store. “Hey, son! May I ask you a question? Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?” The boy licked his cone and replied, “Because the day I take the dollar, the game’s over!”

FAITH FACTS

Celebrating A 40th Anniversary, Part II

Last week we began to consider the importance of

human identity in relation to grave moral decisions, a

ideration at the heart of Paul VI’s Humanae vitae.  In our

modern times, human life seems to be compartmentalized.

We have a life at home, at work, with friends, at church, etc.,

etc., and we begin to think that we must "wear" a different

persona in each one of these circumstances.  Paul VI challenged

us to see that we have a deeper identity that is with us at all times,

one that comes from God: we are the image of God.  This is the

deepest truth about us, a truth that ought to shape every moral

decision we make.

God, the Holy Trinity, is total self-giving love.  The

Father and the Son love each other so much that their love is not

something but someone, namely, the Holy Spirit.  As his image,

each one of us must give ourselves away in love: this IS who we

really are.  In this life, there is no more perfect icon of the Trinity

than a married couple.  When a husband and wife love each other

as they should, their love is not simply something, but it is open to

being someone, namely, a baby.  Pope Paul VI reminded the world

that married love has a purpose and that purpose is to be the sign of

 the love that is in God: three in one.  Contraception blocks this love;

it prevents love from reaching its full potential and is therefore

incompatible with our true identity.  In Humane vitae, Paul VI called

on married couples to hold true to their deepest identities and

therefore to the deepest kind of love.

Jean Valjean eventually answers his question: he decides

that he must live his identity, and so he reveals himself to the court

and saves the innocent man.  Valjean realized that real freedom does

not mean being able to do whatever one wishes.  Real freedom means

living in the truth, living according to one’s true identity.  When a

person hands himself over in love for the sake of another, then he is

truly free; that is married love!  That is Pope Paul’s point!

Thank you for your generosity to the Hurricane Victims. We collected $4247.00 for Catholic Charities.
