BANNS OF MARRIAGE Between Laura Whitted and Andrew Elliff
SAINT PETER & SAINT PAUL, APOSTLES Focus: Ordinary people become extraordinary when they answer Christ’s call to serve. Today the Church honors Saint Peter & Saint Paul. They were among the most influential people in all of Church history. Knowing that He would be leaving, Jesus chose Peter to lead the young Church. Paul was called to lead the way in preaching the Gospel to the Gentiles. Let us pray today for all in leadership positions in the Church. The amazing intervention of God in the lives of Peter and Paul is told in today’s first and second readings. In the Gospel, Peter declares his belief in Jesus as the Son of the living God. In response, Peter is declared by Christ to be the one who is to lead His Church.

YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITIED…. If you’ve been coming to Mass for a while, but are not Catholic, we would like to invite you to look deeper into the Catholic faith. Beginning in September our parish will begin a set of sessions to share with others the truths of the Catholic faith and the fellowship of our church family. You’ll meet faithful Catholics who love the Lord and would consider it a privilege to get to know you better. We invite you to learn what Catholics believe in an open and welcoming environment. These sessions also are opportunities for you to ask those perplexing and difficult questions you may have about the Church. Never give up ‘cause it’s always something!!! A few years ago at the Seattle Special Olympics, nine contestants, all physically or mentally disabled, assembled at the starting line for the 100-yard dash. At the sound of the gun, they all started out, not exactly in a dash, but with a relish to run the race to the finish and win. All, that is, except one boy who stumbled on the asphalt, tumbled over a couple of times and began to cry. When the other eight heard the boy cry, they slowed down and looked back. Then they all turned around and went back…every one of them. One girl with Down’s Syndrome bent down and kissed him and said, “This will make it better.” Then, all nine contestants liked arms and walked across the finish line together. Everyone in the stadium stood, and the cheering went on for several minutes. People who were there are still telling the story. Why? Because deep down we know this one thing: What matters in this life is more than winning for ourselves. What truly matters in this life is helping others win, even if it means slowing down and changing our course.

FAITH FACTS OUR FATHER (continued)
“THY KINGDOM COME” The establishment of the kingdom of God began with the coming of Jesus, but it has not yet reached its fulfillment when everything shall be subject to Him. Recall that in Jesus’ temptations, Satan told our Lord that the earthly kingdoms had been “delivered” to him. The First Letter of John says, “We know that we are of God, and the whole world is in the power of the evil one” (1 John 5:19). When Jesus spoke of His Second Coming in Luke 21, He told His disciples, “When you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near” (Luke 21:31). So in this petition of the Our Father we pray that God will bring His kingdom to fulfillment in our midst.
“THY WILL BE DONE ONE EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN”
“Will” has several meanings in Scripture. There is our will (what we want to do), and then there is God’s “will” (God’s supreme plan). Jesus is His agony in the garden prayed to the Father that His “will” be done. We know that ultimately God’s will is to be accomplished on earth as it is perfectly in heaven. But because of sin (acts that separate us from God) and evil in the world, God’s will is not done perfectly. Again this petition of the Our Father is asking God to bring about the establishment of His reign over the earth. The earth is described as a “paradise” before our first parents disregarded God’s will. Jesus came to re-establish God’s kingdom, but the full establishment of God’s reign will occur when Jesus comes again as judge. Each time we pray the Our Father, we are asking God to allow Jesus to come now. (to be continued)
